No matter if you own your own business or work for an established company, advertising is often times costly and frustrating.

I've heard people saying that they don't advertise because it isn't effective.

Perhaps that holds true for them, but, if they effectively understood how to properly and effectively advertise, it would be very productive for them.

There are many advertising strategies that are effective if used wisely.

Obviously, any new business needs to get their name and business concept out there.

You can't expect to just open a store and customers will simply show up.

You need to tell them who you are and what you can do for them.

Customers need a reason to walk through your doors or contact you.

Your advertising strategies need to focus on informing your prospective clients about what it is you offer and want to do for them.

No matter who you ask, their beliefs about what advertising strategies work best for them differs.

That will always be the case.

However, there are some general rules and suggestions that any advertising strategies should include.

You need to know your market.

Are you selling something for children or senior citizens?

You certainly don't want to be advertising something for senior citizens on a cartoon channel.

That would be a complete waste of time and money.

Once you know what market you are targeting, figure out what the best way to reach them is.

Is your local newspaper worth advertising in?

Find out what the age of the average reader happens to be.

If you call your newspaper office, someone would be able to give you some information.

Perhaps your town has a local TV station that most residents tune to regularly.

Popular radio stations can be an excellent source of advertising.

However, make sure that if you decide to go with radio advertising, you are getting a good time slot.

You wouldn't want an
advertisement that is geared towards younger adults or children to be played in the middle of the night.

If you are looking to primarily service your surrounding neighborhoods, probably the most effective of all advertising strategies would be the old-fashioned way of making your rounds and introducing yourself.

Are there any upcoming business expos that you could attend?

Make up a business packet that has information about your company and what you can offer to pass out to local businesses.

Ask some local businesses to allow you to place business cards in their locations or flyers.

Get friends, relative and business associates to spread the word.

Other than creative and effective advertising strategies, word of mouth and referrals is your best means of getting the word out.
