Creative writing course

Writing isn't an exact science but it can be given value, however subjective that is. Everyone can improve on a creative writing course if they leave their ego at the door.

I like to go on courses every now and then.

It keeps the brain sharp and gets me out of the house! It's good to learn a new skill and meet new people.

I was unsure whether to go on a creative writing course but I'm glad that I did.

The doubt in my mind was due to the way I feel about writing itself.

I have written poetry and short stories for some time and am currently battling to finish a script.

I've had some poetry published for small presses.

My writing is largely instinctive and I think that I have my own style.

I have something to say and I say it my way.

Now, I'm not saying that it's good or bad, just that it is my style.

I can look at things I wrote twenty years ago and I know it's mine.

I was fearful that my style might be diluted in some way and I would lose my identity, my voice.

On the other hand, I know that there is room for growth and improvement.

Having my own voice does not mean that I don't have things to learn.

Far from it.

With that in mind and fears in check, I signed on for the creative writing course.

I needn't have worried.

The course was a valuable experience.

I learned a lot and I still felt that my individuality was allowed to come through.

It was good to be with like-minded people and the tutor was very good.

We were all a bit shy with each other to begin with but we grew in confidence and we shared camaraderie at the end.

I would recommend a creative writing course to anyone, no matter what sort of writer they are.

It's true that a writer has to be born with some raw talent but that needs to be honed and disciplined.

A lot of people have bags of imagination but no direction.

Some people may be good with descriptive writing but weak on dialogue or vice versa.

All these problems can be ironed out with help.

The first thing is to not be too proud to ask for help.

We were given an assignment, to write a short story about someone who had won the lottery, and we had to read each other's efforts and make honest comments.

In an atmosphere of trust, we had a very constructive talk.
