With all of the luxury items in modern life, few of us are aware of how good we have it.
We take it for granted that we will always have a choice of foods from all over the world, expensive consumer electronics, and high quality new clothing.
Few of us, it seems, ever worry about where these things come from.
I know I didn't until recently.
That's when I first heard about fair trade coffee.
The coffee shop where I regularly went was offering organic fair trade coffee.
I am very health conscious, and strive to buy organic whenever I can.
I jumped at the chance to do so, and found the coffee to be delicious.
I wanted to know what is fair trade coffee.
I figured it was just an especially delicious type of coffee.
When I asked about coffee fair trade, the people who worked there were very accommodating.
They explained all about fair trade coffee to me.
Apparently, life is very difficult for coffee farmers.
They are subject to fluctuating prices on the world market.
If the farmers have a bad year, or if the price of coffee drops, it can put small farmers out of business.
Fair trade coffee make sure that everyone, from the farmer to the harvester to the roaster, is being paid fairly.
It is a way of making sure that your money is not going to exploitative business practices.
Buying fair trade coffee means that you are ensuring that the farmers always have a good livelihood.
It wouldn't have even occurred to me that fair trade coffee was necessary.
I was not familiar with how difficult things are in many parts of the world.
You see, every year many small farmers are driven out of business.
When this happens, their only choice is to go and work for the large farming companies that bought them out.
They make far less money, and are often treated very badly.
Fair trade coffee stops this from happening in the first place.
It buys directly from the small farmers instead of from any large corporations that put them out of business.
I think this is very important.
I want my money to go to supporting fair business practices, not exploitation in the Third World.
That is why I always buy fair trade coffee.
The fact that it is the most delicious coffee out there is an added bonus.
