Poetry has been out of fashion for so long that many people consider it dead, and yet it is very much alive.
You see, although it is now impossible to achieve commercial success as a poet, the genre still lives on.
In many ways, the unpopularity of books of poetry is a good thing.
People who write poetry books do not do it because they want to succeed and make money.
People who write a poetry book do it because they are driven to make poetry.
Therefore, much of the poetry today is better than ever before!
One of the great things about poetry books is the variety that exists.
Poetry books take many forms, from the simple to the complex, the ordinary to the sublime, and of course the brief to the epic.
Anything from haiku books to the Odyssey counts as poetry.
All of these poetry books convey different experiences to the reader, and create different artistic impressions.
A short poem may capture a moment in time perfectly.
A long poem may capture a whole era.
Both of these have their place.
One of the best things about poetry books is that they can be easily compiled.
Many people opt to become published authors by creating their own chapbooks and distributing them among friends and family.
Often, small independent bookstores will take these miniature books of poetry and carry them for anyone who wants to find them.
You might find a poetry book written by some unknown poet 20 years ago, just sitting there on the shelf gathering dust.
Open it up. It might just turn out to be brilliant.
If you have never been exposed to poetry books before, it is best to get a wide taste of the different forms before deciding what to read.
You should get a book of poems that surveys both modern and classical poetry.
That way, not only will you have some understanding of the history of poetry and the types of changes that it has gone through, but you will have a wide enough sampling to be able to decide what you like.
Reading poetry, after all, is a highly subjective experience.
No two readers like all the same poetry books.
What one person might hail is a work of genius another might think of as utter nonsense.
As I tell all of my students of poetry, the person whose opinion matters most is you.
