School Safety

I can still remember those days of homework, annoying science teachers that make you where those darn safety goggles, and closed campus lunches.

It's almost that time again.

Yep, all you children and teenagers out there know exactly what I'm talking about.

It's soon to be the beginning of a brand new school year.

Are you ready for the madness? I can still remember those days of homework, annoying science teachers that make you where those darn safety goggles, and closed campus lunches.

Okay, so the campus was actually only closed to freshmen and sophomores.

The juniors and seniors had a little more freedom.

Anyway, when that new school year rolls around for my little girl, I tend to get a little nervous.

This mostly concerns school safety.

I can't help but wonder sometimes about the safety measures of public schools.

What do you think? Are they safe and secure enough, or should a stronger focus be placed on this issue?

One thing I noticed when my daughter started first grade last year was the way things have changed since I was little.

I mean they have really changed.

Can you remember back in the 80s when your mom or dad would come and visit you at school?

Now, regardless if they were there to pick you up for an appointment, bring you a cake on your birthday, or just have lunch with you, it was a rather simple process.

Let me tell you if you don't already know, things have changed.

I am talking about serious security measures regarding school safety.

Now days when I enter my daughter's school, I am entering a front lobby area that is locked up.

I basically have access to the front desk clerk.

She must then acquire my information for being there and my chosen password that was established on the first day of school.

This is how I attain access to my child.

She can call my daughter to the front or I can get buzzed back through the locked doors.

Now, is that school safety, or what?

Please don't misunderstand, I am certainly not bitter or annoyed at the new school safety measures.

I think it's great that more precautions are being taken in modern times.

I will admit that it seems a tad funny that I can't simply head on into my daughter's classroom, but I understand the drill.

Even when I pick her up from school at the end of each day, I must wait for her to come out front.
